(In)tangible

(In)tangible explores the relationship between the grounded and the ethereal, often opposing qualities that exist in space. Groundness refers to what is rough, coarse, rigid, heavy, rocky, layered, and earthy. These traits represent the physical world, weighted in reality, that can be seen and touched. In contrast, ethereality is light, illuminating, airy, translucent, delicate, dreamy, and magical. This symbolizes the un-grounded, like floating souls and boundless dreams and afterlife.
Human beings exist at the intersection of groundness and ethereality; the physical body acts as a vessel for an intangible life force. Thus, being an ideal site for investigation. This thesis explores both through a cross-disciplinary approach, synthesizing materials and methodologies in architecture, fashion, and digital art. Fashion is the most grounded, developing physical garments. Architecture is between both, concentrated on the design of structures and invisible space. Digital art is the most ethereal, as the image is created in a non-physical realm. Through the making process and three final looks, this project examines how these disciplines can transform one another.
